oh, the things you will think

Last night I went to my friend Will's
house to celebrate his mom's 50th birthday.
(She was actually turning 60, but told everyone on the invitations
she was turning 50... awesome.)

So, after everyone sang
Happy Birthday
to her, the awesome 70's dance music came on
and the dancing began.
It was awesome. All these 50-75 year-olds
getting down with their bad selves.
Pretty fun to watch.

Someone started flicking the lights on and off,
making the room into a disco.
I leaned over to my friend Will and said
"My parents used to say that flicking the lights on and off would
cause a fire" so I wasn't suppose to do that.
And Will responded
"Ha! They told you that because it annoyed them when you did that."
I actually hadn't thought of that.
It was hilarious to think of my parents coming up with some
lie so that I would stop doing something
that annoyed them!
And such a dramatic lie too!
Even into middle school,
whenever I was somewhere with friends and they would do that,
I'd tell them to stop it because the lights could catch on fire!
I must have sounded ridiculous!

So funny to think about.

I think I was so impacted by it because I had
(and still have)
a very active imagination.
To give you an idea of how
"active"
my imagination was,
here are a few things I used to believe when I was younger:

Wherever the sun set, that was California.
(Yeah, don't know how I came up with that one.)

That the sign "For Sale, Buy Owner" meant you would buy the owner of the house.
(I never really took the time to think about how that would work...)

If you stepped on a slug, you would become as slow as a slug.
(This was quickly debunked when I stepped on a slug and
sprinted to my house to clean off my foot. *brain synapses being rewired*)

There are more, but those are probably the best.

I am really happy and grateful that I grew up in an environment
where I was encouraged to have
such an active imagination.
Yes, there were definitely times when my gullibility
would make me look like an idiot amongst friends,
but thankfully, having a good sense of humor
and the ability to not take myself so seriously,
made those moments into some pretty hilarious ones.

I'm curious what other people believed when they were young
that they later discovered were completely bonkers.

Love,
liz xo
